Tanza, Cavite \u2013 June 27, 2026. The Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), in partnership with the Reserve Command of the Philippine Army, successfully conducted a one-day Gun Safety Training for Journalists and Media Practitioners at Camp Riego de Dios, Tanza, Cavite. The event gathered members of the National Press Club (NPC), Philippine Press Institute (PPI), Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS), and other media organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The program opened with an invocation led by Leonida Cardona, who reminded participants: \u201cMay this training guide us in wisdom and safety, protecting lives and truth in our profession.\u201d This was followed by the singing of the National Anthem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms. Rebecca M. Velasquez, National President of PAPI, delivered the welcome remarks, emphasizing: \u201cJournalists face risks daily; safety awareness is not optional but essential to our duty.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Usec. Jose \u201cJoe\u201d Torres, Jr., Executive Director of PTFOMS, also addressed the participants, underscoring the government\u2019s commitment: \u201cThe government stands firm in protecting media practitioners your safety is our shared responsibility.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Morning Session: Theory & Legal Aspects<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The morning session focused on the fundamentals of gun safety and legal responsibilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– PLT Levie O. Sinatad discussed the Fundamental Rules of Gun Safety & Accident Prevention, highlighting: \u201cAccidents are preventable\u2014by following fundamental rules of gun safety, we safeguard both ourselves and others.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– PSSG Angelo Carlo Vallarta tackled Identification & Safe Distance Protocols, stressing: \u201cProper identification and safe distance protocols are vital for journalists to remain secure in volatile situations.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Col. Arnold S. Panaligan GSC PA, OIC Chief of Staff Commandant, RESCOM Training School concluded the session with a lecture on the Legal Aspects of Firearms in the Philippines, reminding participants: \u201cUnderstanding the legal aspects of firearms empowers journalists to act responsibly and within the bounds of the law.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afternoon Session: Practical Familiarization<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After lunch, participants underwent a Range Safety Briefing before engaging in a supervised Fun Shoot Activity using standard 9mm pistols. The exercise, facilitated by AFP personnel, was designed purely for familiarization and not for competition. Each participant received one-on-one guidance, with all firearms, ammunition, and safety gear provided on-site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The day concluded with an Open Forum and Recap, where participants shared insights and clarified key points. The Closing Program featured the awarding of certificates, a group photo, and formal adjournment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This initiative reflects PAPI\u2019s commitment to enhancing the safety and preparedness of journalists and media practitioners, ensuring they are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills when encountering firearms in the line of duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
