Media Community and Dayang Family Honor the life and Legacy of Johnny Dayang
Manila, Philippines – April 29, 2026 — The National Press Club of the Philippines in Intramuros, Manila, became the gathering place for journalists, family, and colleagues who came together to honor the memory of Juan “Johnny” Dayang , a respected Filipino journalist, press freedom advocate, and devoted family man. His life and work continue to inspire the media community and the nation.
The program began at 3:30 PM with a quiet gathering and photo display. Guests included Consul Jed Dayang, who has been active in public statements calling for justice and providing updates on the investigation into his father’s passing, accompanied by his wife Maria Francesca (Cesca) Canlas De Leon. Also present were Johnny’s daughters, Bernadette Dayang and Geraldine Dayang-Fernando, together with her husband, Atty. Jose Roderick Fernando.
A Holy Mass at 4:00 PM was officiated by Fr. Joselito “Joey” Irlandes, setting a solemn tone for the tributes that followed.
At 4:45 PM, the memorial tributes commenced with a Candle Lighting Ceremony and Offertory, followed by opening words and heartfelt messages.PAPI National President Rebecca Velasquez, PAPI Chairman Nelson Santos, and National Press Club President Boying Abasola each delivered moving reflections on Johnny Dayang’s contributions to journalism and press freedom.
A message from a media organization representative was followed by a Family Statement, emphasizing the call for justice for Johnny Dayang. The family also offered a tribute, remembering him as a loving father and grandfather. Usec Jose Torres of PTFOMs delivered a message underscoring the importance of protecting journalists and honoring Dayang’s legacy.
The program included an Open Mic session, where selected guests shared personal memories and messages of gratitude.
The event concluded at 5:15 PM, leaving a lasting impression of unity and remembrance. The memorial highlighted Johnny Dayang’s enduring influence as a journalist, advocate, and family man whose voice continues to resonate in the pursuit of press freedom and justice.
