Cagayan de Oro, DepEd, DOST ink MOA to Launch Smart Education Tech System

Cagayan de Oro, Philippines—The local government unit of Cagayan de Oro, together with the Department of Education—10 (DepEd 10) and the Department of Science and Technology—10 (DOST 10), recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the launch of the Smart Education Technology Systems in public schools in the city.

The ceremonial signing of the MOA, a significant event in the city’s Hall on August 19, 2024, aimed to underscore crucial issues such as DepEd teachers’ workload and productivity, student security concerns, and digital transformation in the education sector.

Pedro “Oloy” N. Roa High School and Puntod National High School have been selected as the pilot public schools for implementing Smart Education Technology Systems.

The advanced system, developed by WELA, a local startup incubated by DOST, is a comprehensive end-to-end school solution that offers numerous benefits for both students and parents. Users can easily access tasks, grades, and announcements through a single app. One of the app’s most robust features is an all-in-one monitoring tool for parents, allowing them to stay connected to their children’s classrooms and teachers 24/7. Additional features of the WELA app include online and offline enrollment, real-time school alerts, an attendance tracker, and an item analysis tool to support teachers and school administrators.

The city Mayor, Hon. Rolando “Klarex” A. Uy, DepEd – Division of Cagayan de Oro Division Superintendent Dr. Roy Angelo Gazo, DepEd Assistant Regional Director Federico Martin, DOST Regional Director Engr. Romela N. Ratilla, Assistant Regional Director Virgilio M. Fuertes, and DOST Misamis Oriental OIC – Provincial S&T Director Engr. Ruel Vincent Banal attended the MOA signing.

This collaboration stems from last year’s DOST 10 RSTW activity, ELETRON: Elevating Local Innovation Ecosystem Through Technology and Research Opportunity Network” and “PROTON: Problem2Innovation (A Reverse Hacking Activity). These events facilitated discussions on barriers to innovation and brought together stakeholders from both the supply and demand sides of technology development and transfer.
